Phases of the Moon

  • Lunar Revolution (лунные революции) is when Moon going around the Earth, and it takes one month(29-30 days).
  • The Phases of the Moon (фазы луны) depends on its position in relation to the Sun and Earth.
  • When the bright part of the Moon is getting bigger, Moon is Waxing (растущая).
  • When Moon occurs between Earth and Sun, Sun makes Moon invisible. We can`t see the Moon. This is called New Moon (новолуние).
  • After New Moon the light is increasing but less than half. It`s called Waxing Crescent (Убывающая Луна).
  • When half of the Moon is visible, its called First Quarter(первая четверть).
  • After the First Quarter light is increasing but now more than half, so it is Waxing Gibbous(Растущая луна).
  • When the Moon is on opposite side of the Earth, all light part of the Moon is facing to us. It`s called Full Moon (полнолуние).
  • When the bright part of the Moon is getting smaller, Moon is Waning(уменьшаться).
  • After Full Moon the light of the Moon decreases, so occurs Waning Gibbous (горбатая луна).
  • The Third Quarter Moon (третья четверть) happens when the Moon is at 90 degree angle to the Earth and Sun.
  • After Third Quarter Moon comes Waning Crescent Moon (полумесяц), until light completely gone.

As the Moon orbits the Earth, the phases of the Moon changes. The Moon phases passes through eight phases. It takes about 29.5 days to completely cycle through all eight phases. It starts with New Moon-when moon is between Earth and Sun. Then Waxing Crescent- each  day the light of the moon increasing. First Quarter- half of the moon is visible. After the first quarter the light of the moon increasing more than half its Waxing Gibbous.  Full Moon  - when can observe the entire face of the moon. Waning Gibbous- we begin to see less and less light of the moon. Last Quarter-during a Last quarter moon we can see exactly 1/2 of the moon lighted surface. Waxing Crescent- during waning crescent we can less than half part of  the moon.

Critical Thinking Question-How is earth affected by movement (revolution)?
The Moon affects in many things on Earth, the most obvious being the tides and night-time light levels. Because of the gravity, the moon is able to pull enough of the ocean towards, this creates low and high tides, depending on the position of the Sun and the Moon.
